Cabinet (from cabnet, from the Latin for “box” or “chest”) is a piece of furniture with shelves and drawers for holding or displaying items. It can be free-standing or built into a wall (like medicine cabinets). It may be made from wood, usually with veneers or artificial surfaces. The top is often used as a work surface, such as in kitchens. Cabinets can also be made of metal or coated in synthetic materials such as melamine or Formica.

The Cabinet is the group of high-ranking government officials, usually heads of executive departments, that advises a president or other sovereign head of state. In the United States, it includes 15 members who oversee a variety of executive branch functions such as health and human services, education, foreign affairs, and defense. The Cabinet’s role is to develop policies for the nation and assist in translating these policy initiatives into day-to-day bureaucratic operations. It also serves as a liaison between the executive and legislative branches of the federal government.

The Cabinet is not a political body in the traditional sense, but rather it operates at the pleasure of the head of state (in this case the President). A member can be replaced or moved (“demoted”) to another portfolio by a presidential reshuffle at any time, with no need for approval from Congress. This arrangement makes the Cabinet the dominant influencer in governmental decision making, with other bureaucratic agencies executing policy decisions made by the Cabinet.
