How to Write a Sentence

A sentence is a group of words arranged in an order that conveys meaning. The content of a sentence can be an idea, a fact, a question, a statement, a request or even a command. A well-written sentence is clear, concise and direct; a reader can understand it without much effort. The way a writer strings together the different elements of the sentence, however, determines whether it is effective or not.

A well-written sentence paints a picture of the world for the reader. The sentence should use strong sensory imagery that is appropriate to the subject matter. It should also be free of jargon and unnecessary wordiness. Sentences should be paced appropriately, so that the cadence and flow of the text is pleasing to the eye.

The subject of the sentence must agree with the verb in number, and in case of plural subjects (such as students or animals) the subject must agree with the verb in form. For example, “the students are studying” and ‘the dogs are sleeping’.

The subject of the sentence must be either a noun or a verb phrase, and the subject must be complete in itself. A subject is an independent clause that expresses a complete thought. It can be combined with other independent clauses using coordinating conjunctions (for, and, or, nor, yet, and so on) to make a complex sentence.
